21st January Official Communication from Peterborough City Council
'Cabinet members have approved the sale of a council asset in Werrington to a buyer which is looking to develop the site for use as a hydrotherapy pool.
At the meeting which took place yesterday (Tuesday) Cabinet members approved the disposal of The Barn on Hodgson Avenue, Werrington, to a third-party organisation.
As a result, the purchaser will now be able to proceed with redeveloping the site for a hydrotherapy and rehabilitation facility incorporating robotic-assisted therapy equipment.
This proposed facility would complement local NHS and voluntary sector services and provide significant social value.
Speaking after the meeting, Council Leader Councillor Shabina Qayyum, said: "Since the closure of the St George's Hydrotherapy Pool in 2022 I have supported residents and members in their attempts to find a way to once again provide access to hydrotherapy in the city. As a GP I know how beneficial this service is for people and the very positive impact it can have on people's lives.
"I am delighted that this decision from Cabinet now opens the door for a third-party organisation to take this unused site and turn it into something which can benefit the entire city and I dare say those living further afield. It will also generate a capital receipt for the council, which is positive for all council tax payers.
This has truly been a labour of love and I would like to thank all those who have worked so hard to meet the need for hydrotherapy provision, including the local ward councillors John and Judy Fox and Sarah Hillier."
